A Montana Sapphire Engagement Ring

What happens when two lake-loving, September-born people fall in love? The creation of an exceptional Montana sapphire ring.

Maura and Nate wanted a custom engagement ring, made with a sapphire, representing both of their birthstones. They also hold the state of Montana dear to their hearts, so they specifically requested a Montana sapphire. This was exciting for me because I adore Montana sapphire. I even have two in my own engagement ring, so you know I really, really, like them.

Montana sapphires come in an outstanding variety of colors. They can portray the “sapphire blue” that is typically thought of for the gemstone, but also greens, oranges, yellows, pinks, and purples. Truly, a full rainbow of possibilities.

With a few parameters in mind - either a round or oval-shaped gem around 2 carats, I found a few that seemed to fit Maura and Nate’s wishes. I presented a few options to the couple, and they chose their incredible, blue-green, 2.52-carat Montana sapphire.

Once the stone was chosen, I created a few sketches. We knew we wanted this ring to be a solitaire ring in yellow gold. Maura and Nate are quite outdoorsy, so they wanted that reflected in this ring, without being over the top. We decided on a 3mm band, lightly hammered to give it an organic feel, without taking attention away from the sapphire focal point. They also chose to opt for 6 prongs, for extra security of the gem, and a gorgeous design choice.

Nate, being the amazing craftsman he is, decided to create a stunning ring box out of black walnut for the proposal. We were both quite giddy over how great it complimented the ring. What a memorable keepsake!

A good engagement ring has a story. A remarkable one reflects the owner. This one truly fits this couple, two people who love the outdoors, and water. This ring shifts color during the day, from a bright blue with green layers, to a dark blue in the evening, just like the beautiful lakes in Minnesota where they reside. It has a soft, hammered finish on the gold band, which gives the ring an even more unique edge, but not too much to detract from its center. It’s a balanced yet enchanting ring for an amazing couple.

I'm always honored to play a part in people's love stories. Nate and Maura, I wish you all the best, and I couldn't be more thrilled you chose to work with me.
